My career so far...
I studied history at Cambridge University, where I spent far too much of my spare time working on, and eventually as editor of, The Cambridge Student.
After graduating, I spent an unforgettable year in Alabama as a staff writer on the Huntsville Times, during which I covered everything from the 2004 presidential election and tornadoes to the local school board.
On returning to the UK, I briefly worked in a number of PR roles. Then in 2007 I joined the GP magazine Pulse.
In two years there as a reporter I specialised in medical politics, primary care funding and NHS IT, and broke dozens of stories which were picked up by the national press. Between 2009 and 2010 I was editor of Pulse's website, and oversaw an 80% increase in traffic. In 2011 I was promoted to deputy editor, and in 2012 I was appointed editor, leading a team of nine journalists working across print and online. I relaunched both the website and the magazine (in a new monthly format), and also launched our first iPad app. In my final year as editor we were rewarded with a sharp rise in traffic, a doubling of website comments, more than 100 mentions in the national press and a series of award nominations.
In April 2014 I joined the UK's biggest consumer website MoneySavingExpert as consumer and features editor, and from December 2015 was news and features editor, before being appointed to my current role of news and investigations editor in February 2020. Working closely with one of the UK's best-known journalists, founder Martin Lewis, I now run the site's news and investigations, oversee the homepage, coordinate MSE's coronavirus coverage and help edit the email newsletter, sent to more than 7m readers each week.
While at Pulse and MoneySavingExpert I've appeared regularly on TV and radio, including interviews on Newsnight, ITN's News at Ten and Sky News. I've been shortlisted for a series of awards, including the 2008 Press Gazette Exclusive of the Year and News Reporter of the Year, 2010 BSME New Editor of the Year (Business) and Website Editor of the Year (Business), 2013 BSME B2B Editor of the Year and 2014 PPA Business Editor of the Year.
As well as being a writer and editor, I have plenty of experience working on long-term editorial strategy, having developed new formats, launched multiple websites helped create events and led brand rethinks.
In my spare time I enjoy travelling, cinema and supporting Newcastle United.
